Chemical exfoliation can completely transform uneven texture and dullness, but only if you use the correct molecular weight and concentration. Many people purchase high-strength chemical peels expecting instant radiance, only to end up with red, flaky patches and a compromised acid mantle. Understanding the science of active percentages is your shield against routine-induced irritation.

Select the Right Molecular Weight

Glycolic acid has the smallest molecular size among alpha hydroxy acids, meaning it penetrates deeply and rapidly but can easily irritate sensitive skin types. If your skin is prone to redness, consider larger molecules like lactic acid or gluconolactone, a polyhydroxy acid. These larger compounds exfoliate the very surface of the skin more slowly, delivering a smoother texture with minimal tingling.

The Sweet Spot of Product Formulation

Higher percentages do not automatically yield better skin. A daily liquid exfoliant formulated with two percent salicylic acid or five percent lactic acid is generally the sweet spot for visible refinement without barrier destruction.
